Bayliss started when Jack Bayliss established the company in 1938, initially providing handmade rugs sourced from a secluded region in Northern India, alongside Axminster carpets imported from England. In the early 1960s, the second generation, Alan Bayliss and his wife Margaret, joined the business. Their enthusiasm and global travels in pursuit of distinctive rug designs significantly transformed the business. As a result, Bayliss gained recognition for its diverse range of appealing products, which became highly sought after by consumers and were distributed across retailers throughout Australia.
Over the years, Bayliss has undergone significant evolution, with sons David and Jeff becoming part of the business in the 1980s, followed by Daryl in the early 1990s. As a tightly-knit family, they have collaborated with numerous new retailers across Australia, consistently developing and launching innovative rug designs. In the 2000s, we expanded our reach by showcasing our rugs at international trade fairs in Singapore, Paris, China and Germany resulting in our rugs being available through retailers in over 20 countries globally.
At present, the business is under the ownership of the third generation of Daryl and Jeff, with their rugs available through a curated selection of retailers, online platforms, and designers, decorators, architects, and builders/developers. We are immensely proud of our lasting collaborations with international partners, particularly in Europe and Asia. This enduring respect encourages both innovation and practicality in our rug designs.
Currently Bayliss features two showrooms in Victoria and Queensland, showcasing our latest rug collection.
